I felt while reading it that I could just smell Amma’s biscuits! Really though, it is seamless prose, I couldn’t tell where one author ended and the other began. The writing of Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl is delicious. Beautiful Creatures combines all of those elements to make one awesome book. I also enjoy reading paranormal books as well as reading YA books. I love going to Florida, loved Myrtle Beach, and really like The Waffle House (we don’t have any in NY around me, whereas when I went south they were EVERYWHERE, it was like heaven, ya’ll!). I know I know that’s wrong, but I bet when I tell you I’m from New York you immediately think of the City, when in reality I’m from upstate NY, which means lots and lots of suburbs, farms, and country side. I tend to imagine most southerners as sounding like Jeff Foxworthy in accent. I have some unfortunate preconceived notions about the south. Mysterious girl then materializes in real life, her name is Lena. It would seem that Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl has taken the YA world by storm! A quick synposis: Ethan the main character starts to have dreams about a mysterious girl. Clearly if you have not heard of Beautiful Creatures yet, you must be living under some sort of rock. But readers who like angst-filled teenage romance will be swept up by the haunting and detailed atmosphere, the conventions and strictures of Southern life, and a compelling and dimensional mythology. As Lena's 16th birthday approaches, bringing life-changing consequences, more questions are raised than answered, and the protracted climax is a long time coming. Ethan realizes that there is a magical dimension to stultifying Gatlinand that he, Lena, her family, and even his mother's death are all wrapped up in it. Ethan and Lena connect quickly and intensely: he sees her in his dreams, they can converse telepathically, and the discovery of a buried locket gives them Civil Warera visions. He gets his wish when he meets beautiful Lena, who arrives in town to live with her reclusive Uncle Macon (making her an outcast as well). Narrator Ethan, a high school senior being raised by his distant father and their tarot-reading housekeeper, longs to escape the history and sameness that afflicts his hometown of Gatlin, S.C. Garcia and Stohl's debut is a tale of star-crossed teenage lovers entwined with history, magic, and family.
